I imagine that the first years would find it very easy to get lost at Hogwarts, so it must be up to their fearless Heads of House to take it upon themselves to lead them through safely.

I CAN'T be the only who's teacher did this right? during field trips my first grade teacher would always have the class hold onto a long rope so that we wouldn't get lost and would keep a straight line. It might have been just a small step above keeping us tied to a leash, but hey...
(students in order) Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, Neville Longbottom, Lavender Brown, Parvarti Patil, Seamus Finnigan, Dean Thomas.

Nope. Teacher never did anything like that with me. Then again, on field trips they always has a couple of the lunch-ladies and classroom assistants along, so we were pretty much herded along like cattle or sheep.
Great picture: the expression on McGonagall's face is perfect.
